Congress welcomes UCU's international commitment

3 June 2019 | last updated: 17 March 2021

A number of motions on global and international issues were debated and passed at UCU's 2019 annual congress meeting held at Harrogate at the end of May.

UCU's current and ongoing commitment to international issues was welcomed with a resolution to continue to engage regions, branches and members in practical international work, including ongoing support for EI, TUC, Amnesty and other affiliated solidarity organisations.

Delegates also declared solidarity with sister education unions standing up for staff, students, and academic freedom in Brazil, agreed to support and publicise the Sudanese campaigns such as Justice For Sudan, agreed to look into the feasibility of committing itself with the Fairtrade foundation, and agreed to campaign against US intervention in Venezuela and to affiliate to the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign.

Congress also reiterated its opposition to any state visit from President Trump and support any broad-based protests called against his visit.
