UCU comment on Scottish Funding Council coherence and sustainability review

29 June 2021

Commenting on the Scottish Funding Council's coherence and sustainability review, Mary Senior, UCU Scotland official said 'We welcome the SFC's call for multi-year funding commitments from government to help universities plan and work on a more sustainable basis. It is also good to see it acknowledge how important universities are to delivering an education-led recovery from Covid, addressing the climate emergency, and meeting the ongoing need to upskill people.

'However, this vision must be matched by the funding needed to deliver it, not the calls for greater efficiencies, increased class sizes and reductions to staff, which are outlined in the report. The quality of learning, research and the student experience depends upon the staff that deliver it. We need to be investing in education and skills, not cutting staff or funding.'
