Getting a better deal: our submission to the UKRI consultation

8 June 2022

We have sent UK Research and Innovation our new report on what funders, government and universities need to do to ensure all PGRs get a better deal during their PhD.

This is based on what you told us through our survey and focus groups earlier this year.

We highlighted ways in which the current system fails to support PGRs to live well, do meaningful research and build careers. We also described the ways in which the system failed to support migrant and international PGRs, disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent PGRs, Black and other underrepresented minority ethnic PGRs, PGR parents and those with other caring responsibilities, self-funded or unfunded PGRs, women and non-binary PGRs, LGBTQ+ PGRs and working class and/or 'first generation' PGRs.

You can read our full report and a summary version below, including a range a recommendations, based on what you told us needs to change now:

UCU - Getting a better deal for PGRS - summary [359kb]

UCU - Getting a better deal for PGRS, Jun 22 [2mb]

Thank you to everyone who took part in this research. We will be having follow-up meetings with UKRI to discuss our recommendations and other issues soon.
