Win on pay & conditions at Newham College

18 March 2022

Staff at Newham College have won improved pay and conditions after successful negotiations between management and UCU.

The deal includes a commitment by the college to improve academic pay scales, implement a 2% pay rise, review sessional tutor's contracts and to implement a workload working group and a sustainability working group.

The new deal paves the way for:

  • 2% cost of living increase for 2021/22 to all staff below senior executive level to be implemented from January 2022
  • a starting salary for all qualified lecturers being increased to at least £31K.
  • the pay of almost 40 lecturers whose salary was previously capped just below £30K being moved to a new pay scale that will see some receive an annual increase of up to £7.5K
  • furtherance of UCU's green priorities through a joint sustainability working group
  • addressing concerns over workload in a joint workload working group
  • reviewing the amount of staff on sessional contracts with a view to moving some to fractional contracts.

UCU London regional support official Caroline Lake said: 'This welcome agreement with Newham College will lead to better pay and working conditions for teaching staff.'
