Workload rep training 1: introduction to the workload campaign and the role of the workload rep - 17, October, 2025, Online, UK wide course

This half day course is open to UCU activists and reps who want to build upon their knowledge of workload as a health and safety hazard in the workplace. You should ensure you have branch approval prior to attending and tick the relevant box on the application form. The UCU workload campaign gives us the tools to tackle increasing workloads and working hours. The failure of employers to protect staff from excessive workloads and stress is damaging our health, our students' education, and our ability to organise to defend ourselves and our sector. This course will give you a generic overview of workload campaign and the role of the workload rep. You must complete workload reps 1 before attending workload reps 2.

This course is open to all reps and activist from all Devolved Nations and Regions

Date: 17, October, 2025

Time:  9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Venue: Online

The course materials will sit on a secure UCU share point platform. You will be given login instructions nearer the time. Please note that you will need to access this platform via an 'incognito' or 'private browsing' window. You will not be able to request access via an existing work or personal Share Point account.

Teaching will be delivered by a course tutor via zoom.

Application deadline: Please note applications for this course will close at 12 noon on Tuesday 14th October 2025. Applications beyond this point will not be accepted.

Course time commitment: 3 hours plus 1 hour to complete the pre-course activity

The course will cover:

  • workload campaign overview
  • workload, stress and health and safety legislation
  • introduction to the role of the workload rep
  • building a workload campaign team
  • undertaking local workload surveys
  • setting local action plans
  • bargaining for improvements

Who is the course for:  This short course is open to UCU H&S reps, branch officers, reps and activists who want to tackle the causes of workload stress in the workplace . It is envisaged that post course you will be actively involved in any branch workload campaign.

This is an important campaign'It's your time' workload campaign which involves every member and worker in your institution. Getting involved with this training and the campaign will ensure that you can make a real difference to peoples day to day lives in the workplace.
