UCU Rising: Reballot results

3 April 2023

I can today announce that our union has once again smashed the Tory anti-union thresholds and delivered resounding YES votes in our reballots in our pay and conditions and USS pensions disputes.

In summary, the results for UCU's pay and conditions reballot are:

Are you prepared to take industrial action consisting of strike action?

Yes: 85.65%

No: 14.35%

Are you prepared to take industrial action consisting of action short of strike action?

Yes: 89.92%

No: 10.08%

Turnout: 56.41%

And in our USS pensions dispute:

Are you prepared to take industrial action consisting of strike action?

Yes: 89.05%

No: 10.95%

Are you prepared to take industrial action consisting of action short of strike action?

Yes: 91.61%

No: 8.39%

Turnout: 58.40%

You can find the full results here and watch our live announcement here

Once again, UCU members have made history. The UCU becomes only the third union in the UK and the first education union in the UK to win multiple national ballots.

Our employers thought we couldn't win one national ballot. They felt confident we couldn't repeat it. They were wrong. They continue to be wrong. More members voted yes in these reballots than in the first ballot.

This dispute will go on for as long as it needs to.

This week you will be consulted on the proposals on both pay and pensions. You will decide where that goes.

UCU will also, in line with our policy, serve notice of a national marking and assessment boycott to begin later this month.

The voting will continue. The action will continue. The negotiations will continue.

But today you can take stock. Today you can be proud. Today you mark the calendar as the day the UCU confirmed it now does things differently.

Enjoy today everyone, tomorrow it's back to the challenge of changing our sector forever.

UCU and proud.

In solidarity

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
