Northern Ireland further education: your strike action this week
22 September 2023
This has been a strong week for our union. None of us wanted to get to this place, but the college employers have forced us to it. I want to pay tribute to everyone who has contributed this week. From the dedicated branch reps, the union staff who work tirelessly, and to you the members who have backed the union and backed each other.
The well attended pickets and your resolve have led to unprecedented news coverage in Northern Ireland this week. This is down to you. It has meant that in addition to the industrial pressure you have placed on your employer, we have created political and media pressure. Putting the employers under intense scrutiny. I need you to bring this same level of dedication and resolve to the following period--we will get movement from the employers but it is going to require everyone pitching in. So please, be proud of yourselves this week, and ensure you speak to your colleagues and ensure everyone knows what day they are doing in this rolling regional action. The longer the picket line, the shorter the dispute, and the quicker you get what you are owed!
I also want to say a huge thank you for welcoming me onto your pickets this week. I'm sorry I didn't get to see everyone, but the hospitality and warmth that I did experience was really lovely.
In solidarity
Jo Grady
