UCU responds to report into the experience of trans and non-binary students in higher education
23 May 2024
Responding to a report published today by the Higher Education Policy Institute, UCU said there is work to be done on the well being of trans students and called for more training for staff so that everyone can better understand the challenges that trans and non-binary students face.
UCU general secretary, Jo Grady said: 'Whilst it is good news that trans students are having generally positive university experiences, this report shows that more needs to be done to increase the wellbeing of trans students and address their built-in disadvantage. The report also exposes the dangers of using graduate employment data to determine course value when equality factors such as gender identity have such a major impact on earnings.
'We welcome calls for increased training for staff, so that everyone can better understand the challenges faced by trans and non-binary students and hope employers will fully invest both the time and money needed.'
