H&S 1 - induction (health & safety reps role and functions): 11, 12, 13, June, 2025, Northern region, Newcastle/Gateshead

This course forms the first part of UCU's health and safety training programme. This course is for new health and safety reps, those who have been in the role sometime but have never been trained, along with those in the branch who want to further understand the role, and legislation that enables health and safety reps to hold institutions to account.

Please ensure you can attend the entire course prior to submitting your application  form. Please further ensure you have secured time off from your employer to attend.
Course meeting times: 9:30 am. to 4:30 pm.
Course time commitment:20 to 25 hours including pre and post course work

Online via teams or zoom

You will also receive a log in to the TUC stream platform on which the course materials, pre-course work and activities are hosted. Please note, you will be sent a zoom/teams link for the actual course meetings.

Please be aware applications for this course will close at 12 noon on Thursday 5th June 2025. Applications after this day may not be considered

Course content:

    The course will cover: 

    • the role and functions of a safety rep
    • how to obtain facilities and time off to carry out the safety rep's function
    • using the safety reps and safety committee regulations
    • employers' duties under health and safety legislation
    • a trade union and equal opportunities approach to health and safety
    • how to organise UCU members around hazards at work - including the Covid-19 pandemic
    • develop essential safety rep skills.

    We also run a short 'risk assessment' course that we would recommend post your H&S 1. You should also consider getting involved with the 'It's your time' workload campaign which you will be introduced to on this course. Workload Reps 1 & 2 training's will be advertised on the training website when dates are available.

    UCU courses are funded via members' contributions and public funding.

    Information Facility time

    Online courses are no different to face-to-face courses in terms of time off for training. Time off for training is a right and one which should be exercised as part of normal industrial relations. For more info please see  Facilities and time off for UCU reps.

    When you apply for a course we will assume that are making a commitment to attend the course as advertised, and have secured time off from your employer. Please contact your branch/region if you are having problems securing time off.

    Important Before you complete this form, please be aware: You may be asked to register with the delivering college in which your trade union tutor is employed. Where colleges are drawing down funding for delivery you will be ask for your passport or equivalent identification details to register. This is a demand of the college who are following government requirements in order to satisfy public funding criteria. This is not a requirement UCU want to see and we are lobbying for change. However, as it stands, if you do not register with the college, your place will not be fundable.
