Election address
I am honoured to announce my candidacy for the NEC position of Migrant Workers' Representative. As a Portuguese lecturer at Ealing and Hammersmith College, I have personally navigated the tumultuous landscape that emerged following the UK's departure from the EU. Despite having settled status, I frequently face the challenge of proving my right to live and work here—a constant reminder of the uncertainties migrant educators endure.
This experience has strengthened my resolve to advocate for migrant educators who enrich our institutions with their diverse perspectives and expertise. I pledge to campaign for a more respectful and efficient system that recognises and accepts our status without unnecessary hurdles.
Navigating the complex immigration and visa system is time-consuming and financially draining, exacerbated by exorbitant fees and ever-changing policies that add undue stress. I am committed to advocating for a streamlined, fair, and affordable process, and will lobby against policies that tie visas strictly to employers, which can lead to job insecurity.
A critical concern for many migrant workers is recognition of international qualifications. Despite bringing valuable expertise, barriers to having credentials fully acknowledged persist, hindering career progression and undervaluing our contributions. We should work towards establishing standardised recognition practices across post-16 education, ensuring skills and experiences are duly recognised.
Workplace discrimination and subtle biases have unfortunately become more pronounced. These can manifest in hiring practices, pay disparities, and limited advancement opportunities. I am committed to promoting equality and diversity initiatives, fostering an inclusive environment where all educators are valued.
Language and cultural barriers can impede migrant workers' full integration and effectiveness within education. I propose implementing support programmes that include language development resources and cultural orientation workshops. Additionally, access to public services like healthcare and housing should be straightforward, yet many migrants encounter obstacles due to bureaucratic complexities. Employers should provide clear guidance for accessing these essential services.
Recognising additional stressors migrant workers face, I will champion the expansion of tailored mental health and wellbeing support, which is crucial to our professional effectiveness and personal fulfilment.
Finally, I am dedicated to engaging in collective bargaining to improve pay, working conditions, and job security for migrant educators, many of whom are on precarious contracts. Fair compensation and stable employment are fundamental rights we must secure for all our members.
With your support, I am eager to be a strong FE voice for migrant workers, addressing these challenges head-on. Together, we can cultivate a more equitable, inclusive, and supportive environment within our workplaces.
Please give your number 2 vote to Ariane Bogain to help us achieve these goals. I will also be voting for Dyfrig Jones as Vice President and Andrew Feeney as Honorary Treasurer and would encourage you to do the same.
