Dr Angela Roger (University of Dundee)

Election address

I am currently one of five Trustees of UCU.  I am seeking re-election for a second term.

The Trustees hold the finances and property of UCU in trust. Trustees may not vote on UCU policy but they may speak on financial and property matters at the National Executive Committee (NEC), at the Strategy and Finance Committee and at Congress.

Trustees must take a long-term view of UCU's finances and organisation. They are therefore elected for five years compared to the two years for NEC members. Trustees must ensure that the UCU builds and maintains healthy reserves to meet current and future challenges. The property portfolio must also be monitored.

The UCU's finances are dependant on members' subscription income. The UCU needs crucially to increase membership and improve the involvement of its members. We must represent and support all members on pay, pensions and conditions of work. I want to see our resources spent for the benefit of our diverse membership in all sectors throughout the UK.

I have the experience and skills to serve a second term as a Trustee.  I previously served two terms of office as UCU Honorary Treasurer.  I always welcomed the scrutiny and advice of the Trustees regarding the UCU's property and finances.  In turn, I will ask the awkward questions that need to be asked by a Trustee.

I have broad and relevant experience at local and national levels, including:

Trustee, UCU, 2020-present;

Honorary UCU Treasurer, 2013-17;

Honorary Secretary, UCU Scotland, 2006-13;

UCU-appointed Trustee and Director, Universities' Superannuation Scheme, 2012-16;

Chair, Board of Trustees, TSN/Recourse, now Education Support, 2013-16;

Vice-President UCU, 2006-07;

President, AUT (one of our predecessor unions), 2004-05;

President, AUT (Scotland), 1988-2000;

President, Dundee AUT, 1996-1998 and 2000-2004.

In 2014 I retired as a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee after 31 years' service.

I have wide support for my candidacy from pre- and post-1992 higher education, from further education and from each of the home nations.

I will stay focused on the core issues that affect members, and my experience will keep our finances sound and our union strong and resilient.

A vote for me is a vote for experience, knowledge and integrity.
