UCU condemns Trump's plans for a 'US takeover' of Gaza
5 February 2025
Responding to President Donald Trump's plan for the United States to take over Gaza, UCU general secretary Jo Grady today said:
'The proposal by President Trump to forcibly displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip is not only morally reprehensible but also a blatant violation of international law. We need to be clear; President Trump's plans amount to nothing short of ethnic cleansing. For over 17 months, we have witnessed the horrific consequences of Israel's relentless bombings in Gaza, with critical infrastructure—hospitals, schools, and universities—reduced to rubble. The international community has a profound responsibility to ensure that Gaza is rebuilt, with the needs and rights of the Palestinian people at the forefront of that effort. Any attempt to displace these communities is an affront to justice and humanity.
'President Trump's comments reflect a dangerous disregard for the sovereignty and dignity of the Palestinian people. Such actions would further entrench a cycle of violence and suffering that has persisted for decades. We must reject these proposals and call for the international community to adhere to principles of self-determination and human rights.
'UCU stands in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people, and we reiterate our commitment to support the reconstruction of universities and other institutions brick by brick. It is imperative that Gaza is rebuilt with the Palestinian people and any proposals for their displacement are taken off the table. We support every Palestinian voice in determining their own future, free from Israeli or US occupation.'
