We are the University: update on UCU's campaign

19 September 2025

We are at the end of the first full week of planning for our higher education industrial action ballot on pay, terms and conditions, and a huge amount of work has already been done.

The ballot will be launched in the week commencing 20 October. That may seem like a way off, but it is crucial that we maximise every single opportunity--starting now and stretching until the ballot closes--engaging with colleagues, students, the media, and the wider public.

To this end, I wanted to share with you the first weekly update on the campaign so you have a sense of just how much is going on.

Firstly, we have developed a detailed plan which delivers campaigning activities up until ballot papers land on your doorsteps. This is phase one of the ballot campaign, covering engagement with branches, representatives and members. It also captures our workplace and digital organising activities. We will be making contact with your branches soon, to take them through this strategy.

We have also dispatched major campaign packs to all branches covered by the ballot. These include posters, leaflets, banners and more. We need this to be a highly visible campaign in every university.

We have increased our social media content on the ballot, demonstrating the support UCU has from the wider movement. You will have no doubt picked up on this.

A tour of the UK is being planned where senior officers of the union and myself will meet you and work together to campaign for a Yes vote.

Last but not least, we are now ready to launch a fresh initiative. We will be texting all UCU members and asking you to step up as advocates during the ballot and share content, promote the union and persuade your colleagues to vote Yes.

As you can see, UCU staff are working flat out with lots more to come.

Thank you for your support so far.

As the new term begins, we must together make sure this ballot and our campaign is the talking point in every workplace.

In solidarity

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
