Strikes called off after no compulsory redundancy win at University of Nottingham
17 November 2025
UCU has suspended planned strike action at the University of Nottingham after management agreed to halt all compulsory redundancies until at least 31 October 2026, it confirmed today.
As hundreds of members attended the largest meeting ever held by Nottingham UCU on Thursday 13 November, a clear majority voted to accept the offer. As a result, strike action scheduled to resume today will now be suspended. Action short of strike will continue until the end of December while negotiations on course provision progress.
Management has also agreed to enter meaningful discussions on alternatives to the proposed closure of 48 courses.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady, who joined members on the picket line last month, said: 'I want to congratulate every UCU member who stood firm on the picket line, refusing to abandon their colleagues. This result shows the power of staff standing together. Nottingham's commitment to no compulsory redundancies is a direct result of members' determination, and we will continue to support them as they push for genuine engagement on course closures.'
Nottingham UCU branch president Lopa Leach said: 'Members accepted this offer, albeit with reluctance, given they have lost confidence in university leadership. They are willing to give space to discuss alternatives to course closures. UCU enters these talks in good faith, but we are in no doubt that if there is no sign of real engagement, future action may well be on the cards.'
