Reform cuts ESOL funding as it doesn't help "native Lincolnshire people"

25 February 2026

Responding to a report that Reform mayor of Lincolnshire Andrea Jenkyns is pushing ahead with plans to scrap all funding for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) from 2027, UCU attacked the party for acting vindictively.

Jenkyns has justified the cut by arguing ESOL "doesn't go to native Lincolnshire people", according to FE Week.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: 'This decision to cut ESOL funding is an attack on community cohesion and integration that will cause serious harm across Lincolnshire. This cut must be stopped and adult education in Lincolnshire must be fully funded.

'It is yet another example of Reform using migrants as a political football to enflame division and hatred; on the one hand, Nigel Farage complains about hearing foreign languages spoken in public, yet on the other, a Reform mayor is stopping migrants accessing the very courses that will enable them to speak English.

'Meanwhile, Labour needs to stop allowing Reform to blame the failures of years of austerity on minority groups in our society. This starts with reversing adult education cuts.

'UCU stands against Reform's anti-immigrant rhetoric and on Saturday 28 March we will join over 50 campaigns, organisations and civil society groups to march against their narrative of division.'
