'Colleges desperately need money for staff, not just for buildings', says UCU

1 April 2026

Responding to the Department for Education's announcement that it is funding repairs to college buildings, the University and College Union (UCU) general secretary Jo Grady today (Wednesday 1 April 2026) said:

'We welcome college buildings getting some of the investment they so desperately need. However last month the government confirmed 16-19 year old provision will get a real term funding cut.

'Without a joined-up workforce and investment strategy, and a new deal for further education, college teachers will continue to leave the sector for better paid jobs elsewhere and the gap with school teachers pay, nearly £10,500, will continue to grow.

'New shiny buildings full of students need teachers to impart the skills and qualifications the government promised it would deliver. Colleges desperately need money for staff, not just for buildings.'
