Now it has rejoined Erasmus+, UK government must scrap other anti-migrant policies, says UCU
16 April 2026
Responding to the announcement that UK universities will rejoin Erasmus+, UCU called on the government to halt policies that deter international students from coming to the UK.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: "Students, staff and the whole sector will see great benefits from the UK rejoining Erasmus+. Leaving was an act of self-harm by the Conservatives that Labour is right to reverse. Yet at the same time, the government continues to escalate anti-migrant measures in the sector — from graduate visa restrictions to soaring fees and the ban on all students from Afghanistan, Sudan, Myanmar and Cameroon.
"Between these policies and a failure to remedy the catastrophic financial situation facing many universities, the government is worsening the unprecedented crisis in higher education. If we don't see a broader change of approach, the sector rejoining Erasmus+ will be a much diminished one."
