New free speech rule shows Labour happy to take money from universities but won't help those in financial pain, says UCU

Responding to the announcement of the new university free speech complaints system, UCU general secretary Jo Grady said:

"Labour seems all too willing to intervene to take money away from universities, but refuses to step in and help when universities face financial pain.

"We have big concerns over how the Office for Students, which was often wielded as a political cudgel by the previous Conservative government, will use its powers and whether they will be applied fairly.

"The Office for Students must no longer be used as a tool in campus culture wars. It should instead be repurposed to provide funding that will protect student provision and stop any institutions from going under."
