UCU statement on Golders Green attack

1 May 2026

UCU stands in solidarity with Jewish communities following the horrific attack in Golders Green in London.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: 'Our union is horrified by the attack on two Jewish men in Golders Green and our thoughts go out to them and their families.

'These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a cumulative pattern of antisemitic hatred that is becoming increasingly visible and dangerous. Each act builds on the last, creating a climate of fear that must be confronted and stopped.

'The lessons of the Holocaust are not abstract or distant; they are a warning about what happens when hatred is normalised, when it goes unchallenged, and when people look away. Prevention is the responsibility of all of us, and it begins with refusing to tolerate antisemitism in any form.

'We must never forget these lessons and, as educators and trade unionists, we pledge to defend our workplaces from hatred and bigotry through education.

'Many of our members, especially those of Jewish faith, will be feeling shock and distress following the attack. Everyone deserves to worship and live by their traditions free from fear.

'We stand with the Jewish community in Golders Green and all over the UK and pledge to challenge antisemitism and all forms of hatred wherever they appear.

'Together, we must be united against antisemitism, racism and all forms of hatred.'
