Solid support for Northern Ireland strikes

25 September 2006

There was solid support for strikes held at colleges in Northern Ireland on Tuesday 19 September when hundreds of lecturers took to picket lines in a call for pay parity with schoolteachers.

The industrial action is part of a campaign by the lecturers for pay parity with teachers in schools.

Their plight was picked up by national and local media which gave them strong coverage: BBC radio and TV ran the story along with BBC Foyle radio and TV, UTV, RTE, U105, Cool FM Citybeat, The Belfast Telegraph and The Belfast Newsletter, The Newry Reporter and the Newry Democrat.

The strike is the third since May and further strike action is planned for October and November. Lecturers are also engaged in an ongoing campaign of disruption and withdrawal of goodwill.

Lecturers travelled from all over Northern Ireland to attend a rally outside the headquarters of the Department for Employment and Learning.
