UCU comment on graduate unemployment

15 August 2007

UCU today commented on the Higher Education Statistics Agency's graduate employment statistics released today.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'It is of course encouraging that the vast majority of graduates find work after completing their studies. What is less clear is what type of work graduates are going into. Students are leaving university with huge levels of debt and for many finding work to start paying that money back is an obvious priority.

'We have concerns that new graduates do not have the time or finances to put their degree and skills learnt at university to proper use because of fears over their debts, especially from commercial sources, and find themselves accepting the first job they can find.'
