Downturn in young potential students should be used to improve staffing and open up other opportunities, says UCU
20 March 2008
UCU today responded to a UUK report which reveals that demographic changes may reduce the number of UK 18-20 year olds applying to UK universities between now and 2019.
Sally Hunt, UCU general secretary, said: 'If UK universities find they have fewer young domestic applicants in the near future this will provide an opportunity for universities to improve staffing ratios and therefore the personal student support so essential to student retention and success.
'This is also an excellent chance to meet the Leitch target of 40% of adults having a level 4 qualification by 2020 and shape up proper support for part-time study, and to reverse the denial of re-skilling opportunities for many potential second-time HE students.'
