Hundreds march in Lambeth against 'crippling' workloads

28 April 2009

Members of UCU from Lambeth College marched through Brixton today in protest at heavier workloads and worsening conditions of service. Over 200 people took to the streets, as staff were joined by students on the march through the centre of Brixton.

Lambeth College march against workloads, 28 Apr 09 UCU is concerned  at the ever-increasing workloads for teachers, who they say have reached 'breaking point.' On top of their teaching hours, staff are being asked to attend more and more meetings, complete excessive amounts of admin and paperwork, mark students' work, carry out interviews, and oversee exams.

Susan McDowell, UCU branch secretary at the college, said: 'Teachers no longer have enough time to prepare lessons properly, which is simply not fair on the 20,000 students who come to Lambeth and rightly expect a first rate education. They should be the priority here, and the college should be helping us to put them first.

Lambeth College march against workloads (2), 28 Apr 09 'The pressure on our time is becoming unbearable. We are working a lot of unpaid overtime hours, often through our breaks, and taking work home with us. For years we have been telling the college that we are suffering from stress and illness due to overwork. However, management has ignored us and just continued to pile on the workload. Things need to change now so Lambeth College can play its vital role in providing high quality education for local people.'
