Protest at Southgate College over job cuts

9 July 2009

Staff at Southgate College will hold a special lunchtime rally on Friday 10 July in protest against 30 job losses.

The event, organised by members of UCU, will take place at the High Street entrance to the college at 12:45pm.

The union is concerned that the college is risking its academic reputation with the proposed redundancies in areas including business and law, construction and IT and the loss of five heads of division and five curriculum leader posts.  The redundancies will also mean bad news for the staff that survive the cull as they will be forced to deal with heavier workloads and increased class sizes.

UCU regional official for Southgate, Una O'Brien, said: 'The college risks swinging a wrecking ball through its course provision. These cuts are terrible news for students and the local community. Further education has a crucial role to play in retraining people during the current recession as they seek new employment. The college needs to invest in staff and courses, not cut back on them.'
