UCU response to Tory plans to fund extra university places

4 October 2009

UCU has responding to an announcement from the Conservative Party that it would fund an additional 10,000 university places through early repayment bonuses.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'UCU welcomes anything that adds to the debate around how we ensure talented would-be students can fulfil their potential. However, rather than gimmicks, we need clear commitments on funding - not short-term sticky plaster policies.

'Furthermore, providing a reduction for students lucky enough to have wealthy parents simply entrenches inequality and means that higher education will be most expensive for those families who can afford it least.'
