UCU Scotland welcomes delay in higher education funding changes

12 March 2010

UCU Scotland has today welcomed the Scottish Funding Council's, SFC, decision to delay changes to the way it funds teaching in Scottish universities. The union had raised concerns that the proposals were based on patchy data and dubious analysis, which would have seen some of the newer universities losing out.

Today the SFC announced it will delay the implementation of the proposals to allow for further data to be collected and to reassess the plans. UCU said it would have been unacceptable for the funding council to push ahead without robust evidence and that it now had to ensure it collected the necessary data to properly inform its decisions.

UCU Scottish Official, Mary Senior, said: 'We are relieved that the Scottish Funding Council has seen sense and is delaying the proposed changes to how it funds teaching in our universities. UCU was alarmed that the proposals were based on patchy data and dubious analysis, which would have seen some of the newer universities losing out. Such important funding decisions must be based on robust evidence to ensure our universities receive accurate and appropriate funding to deliver courses.'
