Public expects Lib Dems to deliver on university fees promises, warns UCU

12 May 2010

Commenting on the new government, the general secretary of UCU, Sally Hunt, said: 'The inconclusive election did not provide a mandate for punitive cuts in our vital public services. The new government has a unique opportunity to build a national consensus that puts education at the heart of our recovery. Education has the power to change people's lives and slashing funding at a time when more people than ever need access to education is just wrong.

'We were never convinced by the splitting up of education across government departments, especially further education that didn't have a clear home in either department. We hope the new government will bring education back into one department so we can have some joined up thinking and genuine attempts at lifelong learning policies.

'The Liberal Democrats' opposition to university fees is well-documented and failure to use their new influence when the Browne review into higher education funding reports would be seen by a public, still adamantly anti-fees, as a considerable letdown. UCU looks forward to confirmation that they have persuaded their new political partners to abolish fees over an agreed timescale. This move would expand access and opportunity at a time when our country needs more people participating in education. The thousands of students and their hard working parents persuaded to vote Liberal Democrat to get rid of fees would expect nothing less.'
