Prison educators vote yes to action over contract changes

15 July 2010

UCU members employed by Britain's largest prison education provider, Manchester College, have today voted in favour of industrial action following contract changes introduced by the college which would seriously worsen pay and conditions of service.

Over three-quarters (78%) of those who voted supported strike action and over eighty percent (89%) agreed to action short of a strike.

The staff concerned work in more than 80 prisons and play a key role in the rehabilitation of offenders. The union today pointed to studies which show that re-offending is reduced where prisoners are engaged in learning.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Prison educators work with some of the most vulnerable members of society and deserve to have good terms and conditions. I would like to thank members for their support in this ballot. I am committed to finding a solution to the current dispute so that our members can continue to provide first-class teaching for offenders across the country, and talks with the college continue.'
