Government fees concessions based on votes not principles

UCU today said last-minute concessions from the government were little more than a transparent attempt to woo MPs and not in students' best interests. The union said a couple of late acceptances that the entire policy was unfair were little comfort to the thousands of families who may no longer send their children to university.
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Plans to triple university fees and increase the level of interest on students' debt are not progressive and they are not fair. We could welcome the fact the government appears to recognise this and is making last-minute changes, or we could recognise that this move is to try and firm up a handful of votes.
'If the government really wanted to make concessions in students' interests they would halt current plans to triple fees and decimate teaching budgets. Failure to do so risks putting university out of reach for thousands of families.'
