UCU supports London march in protest at damaging cuts to education

24 January 2011

A march past parliament to highlight damaging spending cuts to education will take place on Saturday 29 January.

Participants will assemble at 12noon at ULU, Malet Street, London, WC1E.

UCU is supporting the 'Unite for Education, Fight every Cut' march which has been organised by the Education Activist Network (EAN) and the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC).

The march, which will include a rally, is also supported by PCS, UNISON's higher education committee and the London Student Assembly.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This government has slashed university funding and expects future students to make up that deficit by paying up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees. Colleges have also taken a financial hit and now many of their students from poorer backgrounds have lost a vital £30 weekly payment which supported them through their studies.

'One by one, this government is dismantling routes into education for all but those whose families are well off enough to provide substantial financial support while they study. And all this comes as we have the highest unemployment amongst 16-24-year-olds since records began in 1992.'
