UCU calls for greater scrutiny of VCs and principals' pay

9 January 2012

UCU today said David Cameron's call for more scrutiny to be given to executives' pay should be extended to further and higher education after it was revealed that the heads of the Russell Group universities received an average of almost £318,000 in pay and benefits last year.

UCU said that staff should be invited to sit on remuneration committees in order to ensure greater transparency.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Higher education staff will be baffled that in the current climate some VCs are still pocketing substantial salary and benefits increases, seemingly with little regard to how such increases look both to other less well rewarded employees and to the wider world.

'All the main political party leaders, including David Cameron, are making strong arguments that executives' pay should be subject to proper scrutiny , including by employee representatives and UCU sees no reason why this should not extend to higher education.  It is vital that we ensure there is proper scrutiny of vice-chancellors' pay and pension provision if we are to avoid suspicion of one law for those at the top and another for the rest.  Anything less brings our sector into disrepute.'
