Hundreds of schools and colleges not sending pupils to Oxford and Cambridge

17 July 2012

Three hundred and thirty schools and colleges in England sent no pupils on to the UK's highest-ranking universities it was revealed today (Tuesday).

Figures released by the Department for Education, which show how many students went to Oxford and Cambridge and other Russell Group universities in 2009-10, also revealed that of the 13 schools sending the highest proportion 11 were selective grammar schools.

Commenting on the figures, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'There is still a postcode lottery in the UK when it comes to education. Unfortunately where you live still makes a difference on how you get on in life.

'We cannot afford to have areas in the country where it is unheard of for people to go to Oxford and Cambridge. The UK badly needs more highly-skilled workers if it is to compete with other countries but this cannot be achieved if youngsters are not allowed to strive to reach their full potential.

'The government needs to increase the aspirations of non-traditional students by making access to higher education easier not more expensive.'
