UCU comment on drop in student numbers
13 December 2012
Commenting on the drop in the number of students at university this year, UCU said the record fall represented a failure of the government's higher education policies.
Figures from UCAS reveal a record fall in the number of acceptances at universities and a drop in applications year-on-year of 46,500 (6.6%).
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Fewer students at universities represent the failure of the government's higher education policies. Higher tuition fees forced a scramble for places last year, which simply highlights the unfair nature of the government's hike in fees.
'If we are to open up university to our most talented people we need to remove punitive financial barriers.'
