Strike on at Chesterfield College in jobs row

29 May 2013

Members of UCU at Chesterfield College have today voted in favour of strike action in an increasingly bitter dispute about job losses.

The strike action will take place next Thursday (6 June) and the union has not ruled out further disruption if the college does not remove the threat of compulsory redundancies. The college has announced plans to make 70 staff compulsory redundant.

The latest job cuts come despite over 100 staff having left the college in the last two years. The union says the college needs to revisit its plans and has called for negotiations around an improved voluntary redundancy scheme.

The 100 staff that left the college in the last two years did so through voluntary redundancies. In today's ballot result, 93.6% of UCU members at the college who voted, voted in favour of strike action, (6.4% against).

UCU regional official, Anne O'Sullivan, said: 'Over 100 staff have already left Chesterfield College in the past two years. Bringing the axe down on another 70 jobs now is a very dangerous move. Staff have done brilliantly to cope with the departure of their colleagues in recent times and should not be rewarded with furthercuts.

'Strike action is always a last resort, but the staff have simply had enough. We will be out on strike next week and will not rule out further action unless the college removes the threat of compulsory redundancies.'
