UCU Scotland comment on the education committee's stage one report on the governance bill

17 December 2015

Commenting on the publication today of the Scottish Parliament's Education and Culture Committee's stage one report on the Higher Education Governance Bill, Mary Senior, UCU Scotland Official, said: 'We welcome the news that the Education and Culture Committee supports the general principles of the Higher Education Governance bill.

'The committee's report asks the Scottish government to provide clarity on various issues - most notably the alleged danger of universities being reclassified by the Office for National Statistics. We support calls for the Scottish government to fix the bill and to take out any threat but we mustn't lose sight of its main purpose.

'The bill looks to return our ancient universities to a position of having an elected chair of court and bring that same democratic governance to our newer universities and institutions for the first time. Making our universities more democratic, accountable and transparent is a prize well worth winning and the measures contained in the bill can ensure the sector continues to be the international success story it is.'

The committee's report is available on the Scottish Parliament website.
