UCU comment on student loan book sale

7 December 2017

Commenting on news that the government has sold off part of the student loan book for £1.7bn, at an estimated loss of £800m to taxpayers, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said:

'We don't think selling the loans off for £800m less than they were originally worth to the government represents a good deal for taxpayers or students.

'Instead of quick fixes which offer poor value for money, the government should urgently bring forward its promised review of higher education funding so we can explore better approaches to student finance for the future.'
