Cuts would "destroy Open University as we know it"

22 March 2018

Staff at the Open University have said that plans to cut courses by a third would "destroy" the institution and reduce it to a "digital content provider".

Leaked proposals suggest that 41 degree courses will be axed, leaving 71 available. UCU said there needed to be a halt to the cuts and a full investigation into how the plans had been developed. UCU said it had no confidence that there had been proper scrutiny of the proposals.

UCU regional official Lydia Richards said: 'The proposals apparently under discussion would destroy the Open University as we know it, turning it from an innovative world-leading distance education university into a digital content provider.

'We want a halt to the cuts and a full investigation into how these proposals have been arrived at. We have no confidence that there has been proper scrutiny in developing these plans.'
