LGBT Members' Conference

Annual meeting for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of UCU, taking place during the annual UCU equality conference.

The Equality groups conference 2018 will be held at the The Manchester Conference Centre, from Thursday 29 November - 1 December 2018.

The LGBT members' conference will be on Saturday 1 December from 09:30 -13:00

Registration has now closed.


Branches/local associations are invited to submit up to three appropriate motions relevant to LGBT members. Motions must have been approved either  by a quorate general meeting, or by a properly constituted meeting of LGBT members. The deadline for motions is Thursday 8 November.


Nominees to this committee must be in good membership standing, be a LGBT member, (this being self defined) and be employed with the last 12 months. The deadline for nominations is Thursday 15 November

LGBT Conference 2017

The conference was hold on Saturday 25 November. The  conference had an international focus reflecting concerns about the large disparity in LGBT rights across Europe. Dorota Obidniak from the European Trade Union Committee for Education will be speaking. A speaker from Amnesty International will report on their actions against the internment and killing of gay and bisexual men in Chechnya and other recent events.  There was also be some focus on policy concerns raised through UCU Congress in 2017 including work with NUS on trans inclusion in sports and sporting facilities. The new UCU LGBT members standing committee was elected at the conference.

LGBT conference 2016

Saturday 3 December

The theme was  Gender Identity Today - learner perspectives and speakers  included Noorulann Shahid, NUS and Cooper Bates, Leeds City College. The conference theme built from awareness of recent developments, including possible generational differences, in the understanding and experience of gender identity. This includes concerns arising from the findings contained in the Forum report 'Pride and Prejudice' and the House of Commons' Women and Equalities Committee report on Transgender Equality.

There was plenty of opportunity for delegates to share their good and bad experiences with a view to producing tangible outcomes which will benefit LGBT members in the long term.
