UCU Wales has congratulated Carwyn Jones on his reappointment as First Minister of Wales and have warmly welcomed the creation of the post of Minister for Lifelong Learning and Welsh Language.

UCU Wales official Margaret Phelan said, 'UCU Wales has campaigned long and hard for there to be recognition of the importance of lifelong learning and the vital role it plays in helping to tackle poverty and to promote equality and social mobility. Adult education in particular, has suffered drastic funding cuts in previous years, but we began to see results towards the end of the last Assembly.

'The appointment of Alun Davies AM to the new Cabinet post, is seen as a positive step forward and a sign of a commitment by the new Welsh Government to ensure that access to education and training is not just available the young, but to all people in Wales, throughout their lives.'
