Wales email - 11 December 2018 / E-bost Cymru - 11 Rhagfyr 2018

11 December 2018

In today's email:

  1. HE ballot on pay & equality - opening 14 January 2019

  2. EHRC inquiry into racial harassment into publicly funded HEIs

  3. New UCU Wales Facebook page

  4. Wales FE disputes on pay & workload - decisions from special FESC held 8 December 2018

1. HE ballot on pay & equality
The special HE sector conference (HEC) in November voted to re-ballot higher education members for industrial action.  The new ballot will involve all branches but this time on an aggregated basis (all results counted together).

The ballot will open on Monday 14 January 2019 and will close on Friday 22 February 2019. HEC also agreed that the same two questions posed in the recent disaggregated ballot will be asked in the new aggregated ballot; do members support strike action and do members support action short of a strike up to and including a marking boycott? Information available via the UCU website.

2. Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) inquiry into racial harassment into publicly funded HEIs
The commission launched an inquiry on 4 December 2018 to understand the types of racial harassment experienced at publicly funded higher education institutions (HEIs), such as universities or higher education colleges. They want to hear from staff and students who have experienced, witnessed or helped in an incident of racial harassment from September 2015 onwards.

Information about the inquiry can be found here. Closing date: Friday 15 February 2019 at 23:59.

3. New UCU Wales Facebook page
We have had to set up a new FB page. It's still called UCU Wales but to make sure it's the correct one, you can search for @walesoffice. If you are already following UCU Wales, could you please swap to this one?  If you are not already following, why not start today?!

4. Wales FE disputes on pay & workload
Our apologies that this section has not been translated into Welsh, but there wasn't sufficient time to allow for translation between the meeting and the circulation date for this email.

Further education sector committee (FESC) met on Saturday 8 December and agreed by a majority vote to recommend acceptance of the revised pay offer from the employers. The employers have also agreed a date for the discussion on workload, that will take place on Tuesday 8 January 2019. FESC also agreed to suspend the industrial action to allow the ballot and discussions on workload to take place, therefore the planned strike action on 13 and 14 December has been called off.

This will be the last Tuesday email of 2018. We want to say a big thank you to all of the UCU branch officers who work tirelessly on behalf of members every day, and to our members who support the work of the union and contribute to the collective strength of UCU Wales.

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy & peaceful new year.

In solidarity
