Note regarding discrepancies between pay settlement uplifts and published pay spine point increases

The uprating of the 50 point pay spine (points 2 to 51) is done on an unrounded basis dating back to the single pay spine of 2005-06.

The use of unrounded figures means that in some cases the published pay spine figure is £1 higher or lower than would be the case if the percentage uplift was applied directly.

For example, in 2014-15 point 28 was published as £29,552. Applying the 1% increase to that figure would give a figure of £29,848. However, unrounded, point 28 was actually 29,551.514 (to 3 decimal places) and so when increased by 1% was £1 lower at £29,847.

2017-18 settlement

The approach to bottom loading was to apply 1.7% or £365 whichever was the greatest. The 2017-18 pay settlement was presented as a set of rounded percentage increases to be applied to pay spine points 1 to 16.
