Stamp out casual contracts

Major win on holiday pay at Sheffield Hallam University

23 November 2021

The UCU branch at SHU have issued the following statement: 'We are pleased to announce that, following discussions with local UCU representatives, Sheffield Hallam University has increased Associate Lecturer hourly rates of pay from 1st September 2021, which UCU has been campaigning for. This change took effect for the 18th November pay date. The new rates are inclusive of the annual pay uplift but also reflect an increase in payment for annual leave entitlement for all hours worked at both flat and enhanced rates. This is a great outcome for our members and is a further step in our fight against casualisation in the workplace.'

Sheffield Hallam UCU anti-casualisation officer Bob Jeffery said 'This is a huge advance for our members at Sheffield Hallam University. It shows what can be achieved when employers engage positively with the UCU agenda on improving the terms and conditions of staff on casual contracts.

'This is also testament to the campaigning of the casualised staff who are playing an increasingly active role in our local branch. There is still a way to go to achieve our ultimate goal of all casual staff being offered the choice of a permanent contract, but this is a great base upon which we can build'.

This has been part of a long and ongoing campaign being fought by the branch at Sheffield Hallam and is a testament to the hard work of the branch activists. While there is still more to fight for (as ever), we should take the time to recognise that this win puts more money into the pockets of our most casualised members and send our congratulations to all those involved.
